Great write up, Chris. I get your point, and I agree that there is a total loss of connection when we solely rely on digital relationships. That's the part of me that just wants to drop FB and MyS altogether; the part that asks why I even have these accounts. Do I really need to stay connected with people that have no desire to maintain an "analog" one? Why should I maintain a connection that only consists of status updates and the sharing of funny pics and vids?

I would, however, like to separate IM, because the people that I maintain relationships with through IM are actual valid, tangible relationships. I don’t mean that they are also “analog”, but that the people that what I connect with via IM, and this may be completely different for other people, is way more involved than the simplicity in status updates. For me, IM really just takes place over a phone when a phone is not practical. In most cases, if I could only talk to people over the phone, we wouldn’t have the relationships we have.
